What to do in Grand Haven State Park

Grand Haven State Park is a 48 acre park with the beautiful sandy shore of Lake Michigan along the west side of the park and the Grand River along the north side of the park. The park consists entirely of beach sand and paved camping sites, and provides scenic views of Lake Michigan and the Grand Haven pier and lighthouse.

Grand Haven State Park offers a 174-site campground that includes the sand beach and paved campsites. Each site provides electricity and a picnic table. There is a modern bathhouse. Campers desiring a campfire must supply their own "contained" fire ring. The campground and buildings are ADA compliant. Camping facilities open April 1 to November 1; modern bathhouse from May 1 to October 15 only.

The day use area is sandy with a picnic and playground area and a beach house and concession building. The sandy beach along Lake Michigan is great for sun bathing and swimming.

The park does not have a boat launch, however, one can be found nearby on Harbor Island. This launch gives the boater and angler access to both the Grand River and Lake Michigan. The pier adjacent to the park provides an excellent place for shore fishing. Charter boat services are available nearby to take anglers out on Lake Michigan. For charter boat information call 616-842-4910.

Although closed in the winter, the park is accessible to foot traffic and offers beautiful winter views of the shoreline ice, lighthouse / pier and sunsets.

The world's largest Musical Fountain is located nearby, with nightly performances through the summer months. The Harbor Trolley travels throughout the Tri-Cities area and is a fun way to get to the various shops and restaurants in the area. The Coast Guard Festival is held annually from the last weekend in July through the first week in August. For festival information call 616-846-5940. The Gillette Visitor Center, located at P. J. Hoffmaster State Park, is a twelve-mile drive from Grand Haven.

This very popular state park attracts swimmers, picnickers, campers, anglers, and sightseers.

Take US-31 into Grand Haven and follow the "waterfront" signs. Go south at the waterfront to the park entrance.
