What to do in Governor Alfred E Smith Sunken Meadow State Park

Located 46 miles from Manhattan, Governor Alfred E. Smith / Sunken Meadow State Park boasts a wide range of topography including beach, glacier-formed bluffs and marshland, tidal flats and rolling woodlands. Activities include swimming in Long Island Sound; hiking six miles of trails, including the northern starting point of the Suffolk County Greenbelt Trail; biking, horseback riding, picnicking, fishing and cross-country skiing. In addition, the park has three 9-hole golf courses, a driving range and putting green.

Sunken Meadow State Park, fronting on Long Island Sound, has a wide range of topography that sustains a variety of flora and fauna. The three miles of beach meets tall, glacier-formed bluffs at the west end of the shoreline. A man-made dam separates the park's brackish creek and marshes from the tidal flats. South of the flats are acres of undeveloped and heavily-wooded rolling hills. In addition, the 32-mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the park.

Recreation
The Governor Alfred E. Smith / Sunken Meadow site offers a swimming beach, biking trails, bridle path, a nature trail, hiking trails, play fields, picnic grove, recreation programs, showers, fishing access, winter sports and three golf courses.

Each golf course is slightly over 3,000 yards; two are par 36 and one is a par 35 (Blue). Each course offers a clubhouse, power carts, pro shop, club rentals and driving range. Yardage, pars and fees vary; call course for details: 631-269-0707.

Located along the shores of Long Island Sound, Sunken Meadown State Park may be accessed off Interstate 495 to Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park.
