What to do in Gloss Mountain State Park

Sunrise over the Gloss Mountians is a remarkable experience. The shimmering gypsum flakes look like diamonds. At sunset, it happens all over again. Hike, picnic and enjoy one of Oklahoma geological wonders!

A recreational-educational park that is accessible for hiking and picnicking from sunrise to sunset. Facilities include a restroom, picnic pavilions, picnic tables, grills, public water supply, handicap trail to historical marker, and a hiking trail from base parking lot to the top of Cathedral Mountain and across the mesa to view the valley floor and Lone Peak Mountain. Points of interest include land geography, geological formations, selenite gypsum, scenery and wildlife. This range is also known as the Glass Mountains.

From I-35, go W on Hwy 412 about 50+ miles to Orienta, then begin a scenic 24 mile drive. Gloss Mountain State Park is 5 miles W of Orienta on Hwy 412.

This state has a mild climate due to its southern location and low elevations. The western regions of the state are somewhat drier than that of the east. Winter temperatures range from 50 degrees to 25 degrees F. The season extends from December through February and very little snow fall during this period. Spring begins in March, with temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees F. Temperatures rise throughout the season and summer highs begin to peak in July and August. All regions of Oklahoma receive days with temperatures reaching 100 degrees. The southwestern corner of the state usually records the hottest temperatures. by October fall temperatures provide relief from the heat of summer. Temperatures during this season reach into the 60s for highs and dip into the 30s for the lows. The relative humidity has an annual average of 64 percent. The most rainfall occurs during the months of May and June.
