What to do in Gilbert Lake State Park

Gilbert Lake State Park lies at the foothills of the Catskills with wonderful views of rolling terrain, a lake and two small ponds. Twelve miles of trails are open year-round for hikers, mountain bikers, cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Other park amenities include camping, fishing, recreation programs and Frisbee golf.

Gilbert Lake State Park rests on the shores of Gilbert Lake. Despite the small size of the lake it is a source of great enjoyment to anglers, boaters and other water sport enthusiasts. The park rests at the foothills of the Catskills offering wonderful scenery of hardwood forests reflected in the clear waters of one lake and two ponds. A network of hiking trails lead to secluded fishing spots and wonderful overlooks. Recreation programs are offered as well as overnight lodging. Bow hunting permitted.

Fishing, hiking, picnicking, swimming, recreation programs, boating, mountain biking, a children's playground and Frisbee golf are offered. Boat rental available. Bow hunting permitted.

Gilbert Lake State Park is located northwest of Oneonta between SRs 51 and 205. The park may be accessed from SR 12 which runs perpendicular between SRs 51 and 205.

The Gilbert Lake State Park area experiences average January temperatures from 18 degrees to above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 to above -6 degrees Celsius). It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 inches to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. The heaviest precipitation is received in the region's northeast segment.
