What to do in Gero Island Public Reserved Land

Located in the north central area of the state in Piscataquis County, Gero Island is surrounded by Chesuncook Lake. Access is via canoe or kayaks. The area is very popular with fishermen offering primitive campsites on a desolate island.

Gero Island is located in the Katahdin / Moosehead / Penquis Region on Chesuncook Lake. In addition, a small portion of this public reserved land is located on the west side of the lake including the historic Chesuncook Village. This fabulously large island and slice of mainland encompasses 3,845 acres of wild forest. Solitude and scenery are unsurpassed on the island that is accessible only by canoe or kayak. Primitive campsites are popular with anglers and canoeists paddling the West Branch Penobscot River.

Recreation
Gero Island is a beautiful island offering a quiet and restful excursion for a day of fishing and picnicking or overnight primitive camping. This island affords fabulous opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature photography. An entrance fee is charged at this year-round site. An established picnic area is provided on the mainland along with several primitive campsites located at both ends of the mainland parcel. Hunting and trapping are allowed, subject to certain rules.
