What to do in Munich

While you may have an affair with Paris or Rome, Munich is the one you marry. Why? It's rich without being snobby, artsy without being impractical. In the cultural quarter, Kunstareal, admire the exterior of the Brandhorst Museum, constructed from 36,000 Day-Glo ceramic rods, before nosing about the post-1945 art collection inside. Take a stroll through the Englischer Garten, the Bavarian capital's answer to New York's Central Park, complete with clothing-optional meadows. Pause on the stone bridge over the Isar River, where wetsuit-clad surfers ride a man-made wave crest year-round. Hungry? Drop in to one of the city's 4,000 jolly beer gardens and cellars or the Viktualienmarkt, a food market that hawks wurst (German sausage) and other comfort food. Still looking to be charmed? You’ll find it in the unofficial slogan: "Munich Loves You."
