What to do in Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area was obtained by the state in 1962 at which time it was named for railroad magnet Henry Flagler. The park was renamed for Gamble Rogers, the acoustic musician who died an untimely and heroic death trying to save the life of a Canadian that ventured into the rough surf. Gamble Rogers is remembered not only for his musical talents, but for coining the phrase, "life is what happens while you're making other plans."

This is a typical coastal park with amenities that include a small sandy and sun streaked campground, a short trail through scrub oaks and saw palmettos, and a man-made retaining wall that serves anglers.

One of the nicest features about this park is the opportunity to view plant life and wildlife. Not as popular as other East Coast destinations, such as Merritt National Wildlife Refuge, this park still offers an opportunity to view the summer nesting grounds of loggerhead sea turtles, a variety of birds including sandpipers, gulls, and pelicans. Several plants are prolific including the protected golden sea oats, southern prickly pear, as well as several beautiful wildflowers including red gaillardias.

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west this memorial park is a popular summer time destination. Located several miles north of the busy Daytona Beach urban area, this park offers coastal campsites for overnight visitors and a quarter-mile of beach for both overnight a day use quests. The park is divided into two sections with Route A1A bisecting the parcel. Beach lovers and campers find their recreations east of A1A while anglers, picnickers, and hikers find their choices on the west side of A1A.
