What to do in Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine’s claim to the legendary Fountain of Youth might owe more to apocryphal retellings of the journey of Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon—not to mention some savvy marketing by the colorful founder of Saint Augustine’s Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park—but that’s not to knock its hold on several centuries of American history. The United States’ (arguably) oldest inhabited settlement, Saint Augustine has seen its share of historic scrapes, from the Spanish fighting the British to the British battling the Americans. More recently, rich 20th-century industrialists like Henry Flagler swept in to develop what became known as the American Riviera, a more peaceful colonization of this inviting and rejuvenating stretch of coastline.
