What to do in Jacksonville

Jacksonville is one of the Southeast’s unappreciated gems. Most road trippers blast through on I-95 en route to St. Augustine, Orlando, and beyond—but they’re missing everything from Atlantic surf hotspots to one of the largest downtown historic districts in the South. Riverside and Avondale are a great mix of old residential buildings and artsy commercial spaces. Head to Five Points to find the heart of the Riverside scene, a longtime counter-culture haven with vintage clothing and furniture shops, trendy street-food-style restaurants, and even an indie theater showing midnight horror flicks. Monthly First Friday celebrations feature local music, food, and shopping specials. And the family-friendly Riverside Arts Market, an outdoor art, music, and produce market on the St. Johns River bank, opens every Saturday from March to December.
