Top Ten Summer Music Festivals
7. Hangout Music Fest (Mid May)
Gulf Shores, Alabama
A newcomer on the scene that’s blowing up fast, Hangout Music Fest’s attendance more than doubled from 2010 (it’s first year) to 2011, when 35,000 people per day showed up to rock under the Southern sun on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. And Hangout is already drawing some of the biggest names on the indie-rock circuit, like the Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, and Jack White. Four waterfront stages means there’s no shortage of bikini-clad beauties, sun-tanned muscles, and dancing into the night with soft sand underfoot. Gulf Shores has miles of beachfront condos that make ideal accommodations for festivalgoers who can afford them. However, those looking to pitch a tent don’t have to venture far: Gulf State Park sits just east of the festival grounds, and Hangout’s organizers set up convenient shuttles to ferry folks in from the surrounding areas and cut down on car traffic.
Hot Tip: Bring the kids. Hangout is family-friendly, offering free admission to children under 10 (two per ticket-holding adult), as well as the Shaka Island Kids Zone with activities, music lessons, and its own stage with a lineup of family-friendly acts.
