6. Wolf Trap, Vienna, Virginia
Located in Virginia near Washington, D.C., this is the only National Park for the Performing Arts in the entire parks system. Its venues and summer calendar are incredibly diverse.
Wolf Trap houses the Filene Center an amphitheater that stages more than 75 performances from May through September. There's sheltered seating for just over 3,800 people, plus a vast lawn for picnics under the stars.
The shows cover the spectrum: pop, rock, jazz, blues, folk, musical theater, symphony and film, dance, and opera. A smaller indoor hall, The Barns, hosts opera during the summer. For dining, check out Ovations, a "casual yet elegant" open-air pavilion. For kids K-6, the Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods puts on a full summer of daytime, family-friendly dance, storytelling, puppetry, and theater shows.
