For nine weeks in late June through mid-August, the glittering ski town in Colorado is a bonanza for classical music. The Aspen Music Festival, founded in 1949, is set in an idyllic spot with the Rockies as backdrop. Free buses bring you from the town's center, or a pleasant walk through Victorian mansions takes 15 minutes.

Most of the major concerts take place in the Benedict Music Tent, a permanent, 2,050-seat structure with fine acoustics, and the almost-entirely underground smaller indoor Harris Concert Hall close by. Opera is staged at the restored Victorian Wheeler Opera House. Internationally known conductors take the podium to lead orchestras comprised of top professional players from around the United States mixed with gifted advanced students.

It costs nothing to sit or picnic on the lawn surrounding the tent. The timing of the big Friday (6 pm) and Sunday (4 pm) orchestral concerts makes it conducive to continue your festivities in Aspen restaurants.
