2. Cambodia (instead of Thailand)
Poised to follow the path of its very popular neighbor Thailand, Cambodia also has appealing rainforests, beaches, and historic temples—all for just tens of dollars a day. Visit soon before it loses its alternative destination vibe. No visit to Cambodia is complete without seeing the massive Angkor complex, with its remarkable Hindu and Buddhist temples built between the 9th and 15th centuries. Go at sunrise and snap your own postcard-perfect shot of the sun rising behind Angkor Wat. Use nearby Siem Reap, a lively town with lots of markets, as your base for exploring this enormous complex, which you'll want to take at least a couple of days to do. Sihanoukville, a port city on the southern coast, has a laid-back beach vibe coupled with white-sand beaches less developed than in Thailand, and you can arrange day trips to surrounding islands. Farther east along the coast, Kep is a seaside town full of renovated colonial villas that now serve as boutique hotels. Be sure to taste delicacies like fresh crab and locally grown peppercorns. Also try to visit Battambang, a town set on the Tonle Sap River. Check out the colonial as well as art deco architecture, and head to the Smokin' Pot restaurant, which offers cooking classes, and you'll head home with a working knowledge of Southeast Asian cuisine.
