10. Trot Out to Oudtshoorn
A visit to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of South Africa, is a must. This small town sits hours from Cape Town in a beautiful valley between the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains. Oudtshoorn (population: 80,000) is the largest town in the Little Karoo region and serves as its commercial hub. While here, pay a visit to one of the many ostrich farms, where you can climb aboard one of these unwieldy birds and take part in an "ostrich race." Also, don't miss the opportunity to visit Cango Caves, a system of spectacular limestone caves, as well Cango Wildlife Ranch, where you can pet a cheetah, wrap yourself in a python, and even dive with crocodiles. And, of course, no visit to Oudtshoorn would be complete without dining at one of the many restaurants serving dishes made with ostrich, a flavorful and healthy meat.
