A quieter alternative to Jackson Hole and home to nearly 500 inches of annual snow, Grand Targhee is known for great skiing well into the spring. To experience a taste of local culture, plan to visit on closing day, April 12, for the eighth annual Cardboard Box Derby. Cardboard "artists" of all ages utilize cardboard, paper, tape, glue, and string to fashion creative sled-like, mountain-worthy "vehicles." Don't think cardboard can hack it on the slopes? Tell that to the people flying down the mountain past you in their sled.
The public is welcome to enter the contest and create a vehicle that accommodates up to six riders. Group entries are encouraged, and the most creative wins. The day concludes with an après ski party at The Trap Bar. Derby contestants receive a beer coupon that is certainly well-deserved by then.
Targhee offers an end-of-season, free-skiing special for season-pass holders at other resorts. Bring your season pass from any resort worldwide and ski one day free for each lodging night paid at rack rate. This offer is valid March 31 through April 12.
Those staying in nearby Jackson Hole should check out the new, ultra-hyped Hotel Terra. Located in Teton Village, the ski-in/ski-out eco-friendly boutique hotel is offering a Ski Green package that's valid until April 6. Starting at $303 per night for two people, the deal also includes daily lift tickets for two. A minimum four-night stay is required. The typical rate for a double room begins at $400, so these savings are significant. (www.hotelterrajacksonhole.com; 800.631.6281)www.grandtarghee.com
