INTO THE TREES: Skiing the Pines at the Canyons (Nathan Borchelt.)

Last winter Utah experienced a record-breaking season for both visitation and snowfall—some resorts saw up to 700 inches. Eleven of the state's 13 resorts are within an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport, making Utah an economical choice for skiers. Visitors on a budget should consider lodging in Salt Lake City. The downside, of course, is that Salt Lake does not offer the cozy resort vibe synonymous with a ski holiday, and it'd likely require a car rental. But the upside is that you'd be able to pick a different resort each day.

Park City-Area Resorts
Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, and the Canyons are once again offering the Quick START program, which lets visitors ski for free on the day they arrive. Simply flash your boarding pass, and you're good to go—and since many flights from both coasts arrive before noon, it's a breeze to enjoy a complimentary afternoon.

The Canyons
Boasting 3,700 acres, the Canyons is Utah's largest resort. Skiers feeling a little cash-starved will surely appreciate the resort's Ski Free with Bonus Cash deal, which offers discounts on its three lodges along with a bonus $25 per day that can go toward meals, rentals, ski school, spa treatments, and more. The package includes lodging and lift tickets for two starting at $349 or $175 per person, per night, based on double occupancy.

Solitude Mountain Resort
Located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude Mountain Resort is introducing a couple of desperately needed, high-speed quads, enabling powder-hungry skiers faster access to fresh tracks. That, and mid-season deals, may break that sense of being the only one on the mountain. From January 4 to February 10, book four nights and receive the fifth night free (excluding January 15 to 20).

Snowbird
Notorious for abundant early snowfall, Little Cottonwood Canyon is the place to be for reliable conditions in November and December. The beginning of the season is also the time to find epic deals, including rates as low as $99 per night at the spectacular Cliff Lodge. Book fast—the resort has not announced when this deal goes off the table. A minimum of three nights is required (four nights during the holidays).
