Virunga National Park

The nation's first national park is also one of the most well-planned preserves in Africa. Known for its beautiful mountains, lakes, and rivers, Virunga is also notable for its large and diverse wildlife populations. The number of resident hippos, for example, is at least 3,000—a world-class count. Along the park's many waterways, you'll find thousands of water buffalos and five species of antelope. Monkeys and baboons gather in the forest. Gorilla safaris have been offered in the Virunga Mountains area, although Uganda is now probably your best bet for observing mountain gorillas. Hundreds of bird species nest in the park, while elephants, lions, and leopards are present in limited numbers.
