Sun Valley, Idaho
Perhaps no U.S. holiday is more steeped in history than Thanksgiving, so it is only fitting to celebrate the holiday at Sun Valley, the country's oldest, most traditional ski resort. This is generally a quiet time in ski country—at least in terms of crowds. The snow, however, has been known to dump on this stretch of the Rocky Mountains at the end of November, creating a wintry, wonderfully white Thanksgiving.
Sun Valley's Thanksgiving Package, complete with all the trimmings, begins Wednesday, November 21, and runs through Sunday, November 25. The package includes four night's lodging and three days of skiing, topped off with a delectable Thanksgiving feast. Package rates begin at $293 per person, double occupancy.
If you're committed to staying home with the family for Thanksgiving, take advantage of another great early-season escape to Sun Valley. The Pre-Holiday Package begins November 25 and includes one night's lodging and one day of skiing for only $70 per person double occupancy ($113 per person single occupancy). This package may be booked multiple days through December 18, 2007. (www.sunvalley.com; 800.786.8259)
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort opens December 1, a touch later than some of the other resorts. But given the resort's northern location and summit elevation of 10,000 feet, early season snow is a safe bet. Carve turns on the white stuff for just $55 per day (regular season is $77) for an adult ticket through December 21.
Early-season guests can also ski for free in conjunction with discounted lodging. The deal starts at $75 per person, per night and includes lift tickets, based on quad occupancy in a one-bedroom unit at Village Center Inn, valid from December 1 to 21 (www.jhrl.com; 800.443.8613)
