Getting There
Cologne airport is 10 miles (15km) southeast of the city center. A taxi ride to or from the airport costs around 25 euros and takes about 15 minutes. Bus No. 170 runs every 12 minutes between the airport and the city centre (5.50 euros) and there are two trains an hour (2.20 euros) between the airport and the city's main train station, which is right next to the Dom and just a short walk from the hotels listed below. In both cases the journey time is around 20 minutes.

Where to Stay
Das Kleine Stapelhauschen (Fischmarkt 1 - 3; 0221 2577862; www.koeln-altstadt.destapelhaeuschen; from 99.50 euros for an en suite room with a view) needs no further recommendation, but if money's no object, look no further than the five-star Excelsior Hotel Ernst (Domplatz; 0221 2701; www.excelsiorhotelernst.de), an essay in understated opulence overlooking the cathedral. Weekend specials start from around 250 euros per person, which includes complimentary use of the hotel's luxury spa, free mini-bar drinks, and a candle-lit meal for two (champagne, alas, is extra).

Where to Eat
The Brasserie Breugel (Hohenzollernring 17; 0221 252579; www.breugel.de) is a pleasant, 20-minute stroll to the west of the Altstadt (Mon-Fri noon-3am, Sat & Sun 6pm-3am, jazz nightly; starters 6-12 euros, mains 18-25 euros).
