Tropical Paradise in a Vine-Tangled Web (cont.)

Fresh-Water Dip: The pool at the Lodge at Pico Bonito (Nathan Borchelt)

The Lodge at Pico Bonito (1-888-428-0221; www.picobonito.com) has a total of 22 cabins on their 200-acre property, each with a full range of amenities that include plush beds, hammocks, and hot water. Rates for the standard cabin start at $180 during the summer season (May through December), peak at $235 during the holiday season from December 21 through January 3, and run $220 during the spring season, from January 4 through April 30), and there's no charge for children under 12. Rates include full breakfast and free entry to the Tropical Butterfly Farm and Gardens as well as access to Pico Bonito National Park and the eco-resort's series of trails. Lunch costs $12 per person, and dinner runs $25 per person for a three-course meal. Other activities, including guided hikes, scuba and snorkeling, and horseback riding on the beach, cost extra. Airport transfers are easily arranged, and special airline rates can be negotiated for additional travel within Honduras. Special package rates are also available.

When to Go
Being near the equator, Honduras temperatures and weather conditions are constant throughout the year, with highs around 90 degrees and lows in the 70s during the day, cooler at night, with a near constant 82 percent humidity. It will rain while you're in Pico Bonito National Park, typically in the afternoon and evenings—but the Lodge has a profusion of umbrellas, and the region's humidity promises you'll be covered in sweat while engaging in any activity, so inclement weather isn't a huge roadblock.

Tropical Tarmac: La Ceiba's airport and neighboring Pico Bonito National Park (Nathan Borchelt)

The country falls just outside of the traditional Caribbean hurricane belt, but it does get hit about once every ten years (Hurricane Mitch pounded most of the coastline in 1998, though most spots have recovered). To avoid a repeat, it's best to avoid the northern coast in August and September. That said, the majority of tourists head to Honduras to escape the colder months in the northern hemisphere (November through April). Expect crowds to surge at the more popular locales. To take advantage of cheaper rates and smaller crowds, consider traveling in October, which does run you the risk of occasional tropical storms, or after the rush, from May through July.

How to Get There
Several major U.S. airlines fly directly to Honduras, including American Airlines (1.800.433.7300; www.aa.com) and the Central American airline Taca/Isleña (1.800.400.TACA; www.taca.com). La Ceiba's Golosón International Airport is also accessible domestically, including Taca/Isleña Airlines or Atlantic Air (1.800.879.000; www.atlanticair.com). From La Ceiba's airport, drive west for ten kilometers to the town of El Pino. A sign for the Lodge at Pico Bonito marks the left turn onto the dirt and gravel road. Drive south for two kilometers to the guardhouse and lodge entrance.
