A little more than 60 miles from New York City in Jackson Township, New Jersey, you'll find Six Flags Great Adventure, a fast-paced amusement park that seems intent on breaking record after record. Featuring Kingda Ka, the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world; El Toro, widely recognized as one of the world's best wooden coasters; Bizarro, the world's first floorless roller coaster; and a supporting cast of more than a dozen more thrill rides, Six Flags Great Adventure may have the best collection of high-adrenaline attractions in the world.

But don't let the park's reputation as a thrill-seeker paradise scare you away from visiting with your family. Milder offerings like bumper cars, carousels, and kiddie rides outnumber the coasters, and you'll find play areas offering slides, climbing walls, and tubes to keep little ones entertained.

Street entertainment, live Broadway-style shows, and concerts fill the Six Flags Great Adventure calendar, and some of the indoor shows and programs offer a great way to get out of the midday sun and off your tired feet. Most of the food is what you'd expect at an amusement park—burgers, hot dogs, and other "fair" fare—but you'll also find sushi, Italian and Mexican restaurants, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

Guests shouldn't overlook the natural wonders at the on-site Six Flags Wild Safari. A 350-acre wildlife preserve featuring 1,200 animal residents (some of which are endangered species), including bears, giraffes, elephants, zebras, and kangaroos, adds up to the largest drive-through safari experience outside of Africa. The animals can walk right up to your car. You can also take a safari in an off-road vehicle with a trained guide (extra fees apply), or board the Safari Express for a one-hour, air-conditioned bus tour of the preserve. Admission to Wild Safari is separate from Great Adventure, but special combo pricing is offered.
