Placencia, a beach town on Belize’s southern peninsula, lies within reach of the region’s spectacular reefs, Maya ruins, and lush rainforests. From the beachfront Inn at Robert’s Grove, families can take advantage of these adventures. The upmarket resort, spread across 22 acres between the Caribbean Sea and the Placencia Lagoon, has a casual feel and friendly staff. The property offers 52 accommodations, including hotel rooms as well as one- to three-bedroom condominiums with kitchens and living areas. Three pools, a spa, a tennis court, and a PADI dive and snorkel center make the resort worth the visit, along with great food, especially the grilled red snapper. For lunch, try the foot-long Hebrew National hot dog wrapped in a tortilla.

Want a Robinson Crusoe, rustic getaway with just a few people on your own palm-tree shaded oasis? Book a night or two at either of the resort’s tiny out islands. Robert’s Caye has four cabanas built over the water and Ranguana Caye has three; each islet also has a small restaurant.

The Inn at Robert’s Grove offers a variety of packages. The eight-day/seven-night adventure includes lodging, meals, and several outings.

Why Families Love It:
This resort lacks a children’s program and probably works best for families with gradeschoolers and teens who want to explore. Snorkelers and scuba enthusiasts go on guided explorations of Belize’s barrier reef, teeming with rainbow-colored fish, sea turtles, and brilliant corals. From April through June, experienced divers can swim with the whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, which can grow up to 60 feet long. At the dive center, children ten and older can earn their junior certification. Inland adventures go to Monkey River, where you’re likely to see howler monkeys, toucans, and manatees, and then onto Maya ruins. The excursion to Lubaantnun, the largest Maya site in the Toledo District, includes swimming in the nearby caves of Blue Creek.

Special Events & Activities:
Snorkel the reef at Laughingbird Caye, rich with schools of tropical fish, and then picnic on Laughingbird’s sugar white beach.
