Bishop's Lodge | Hyatt Regency Tamaya

The Spread:
Situated on 500 acres of the Santa Ana Pueblo's 79,000-acre reservation, the Hyatt Regency Tamaya promises privacy along with expansive views of the desert and the Sandia Mountains. From the property, it's an easy 20- or 40-minute drive to Albuquerque or Santa Fe, respectively. Like many resorts, Tamaya has a golf course, a spa, and three pools; there's even a casino down the road. But what makes Tamaya different is

its close connection with the people of the Santa Ana Pueblo. The 350 comfortable guestrooms use maize, pumpkin, and turquoise colors as well as blankets and baskets with the Santa Ana's designs to further accentuate the resort's authentic Native American feel.

Why Families Love It:
Owned by the tribe but managed by Hyatt, the resort strives to share Native American culture with guests. One way is through Srai-Wi, meaning "to gather children together and share with them." Complimentary experiences include listening to Native American stories under the stars, taking a guided nature walk through the riverfront cottonwood bosque, and going on Journey through Tamaya, a combination history-center tour, nature walk, and an adobe brick-making session. You and your kids can also sign up for a Clay and Culture class ($25) and horseback trail rides ($65).

At Camp Tamaya, ages three to 12 take part in pool play and puppet making, craft dream catchers and rain makers, and bake bread in an authentic "huruna" oven. Full-day programs operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and cost $80, while half-day sessions cost $45 or $55 with lunch. Evening sessions keep kids busy from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with weaving, keychain making, movies, and snacks ($55).

Special Activities & Events:
Enjoy watching Native American dancers in colorful regalia move to traditional tunes. Complimentary performances take place in the courtyard on Saturdays.
