The Spread:
Perched on 300-foot cliffs overlooking the convergence of the Atlantic and the
Caribbean at Puerto Rico's eastern tip, this four-diamond resort is big—five
"villages" that house a total of 983 rooms, including Las Casitas, a complex
of 155 one- to three-bedroom villas that come with butler service. The resort
also has 22 restaurants and lounges, a casino, tennis courts, golf, and its
own 100-acre sandy islet, Palomino Island. Teens and parents can workout at
the well-equipped gym and indulge with rainforest facials, lemongrass scrubs,
massages, and a host of other treatments at the resort's noted Golden Door Spa.
El Conquistador's Las Croabas location, 31 miles from the international airport
and 48 miles from Old San Juan, puts it close to two of the island's natural
treasures, El Yunque Rain Forest and the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo.
Why Families Love It:
Choose from eight pools, including one with a slide and a shallower one for
very young kids. Palomino Island's beach, a five-minute boat ride from the main
resort, offers lots of room in which to play and relax. Kayak, sail, windsurf,
play volleyball, horseback ride, swim, or simply snooze in the shade of a palm tree.
Camp Coqui operates for ages four to 15 and runs daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Indoor
and outdoor activities include swimming, treasure hunts, snorkeling, kayaking,
basketball, soccer, crafts, PlayStation gaming, theater, and hula hoops. The
cost is $75 for a full day, $45 for a half-day. During holidays and summers,
the resort hosts picnics, nine-hole golf tournaments, campfires, and special
tours just for families.
Special Events & Activities:
El Conquistador offers a three-hour evening kayak tour of the bioluminescent
bay, located four miles from the property, where the water literally glows with
tiny organisms with each paddle stroke. Recommended for ages six and older (adults,
$67, children age six to 12, $60).
