The Spread:
What do kids like best about Doral Golf Resort & Spa The Blue Lagoon, period. This is a multi-pool water park with a sandy zero-entry space for tots, cascading falls, kiddy pool, water volleyball, poolside cabanas, and the 125-foot Blue Monster waterslide. In fact, there's so much splashing that kids hardly notice that the resort isn't beachfront.
The slide takes its name from the resort's famous Blue Monster golf course, one of five 18-hole championship courses on property. Golfing is a clear priority at Doral, which has a top-ranked golf school. Tennis enthusiasts can also take lessons at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. Meanwhile, frayed parents will enjoy the spa, with its varied treatments plus splash and therapy pools.
Minutes away from Miami International Airport and 16 miles from the beach, the Mobil four-star Doral takes up 650 acres with 693 rooms and suites. Parents can pay an optional $16 "unlimited access fee" that allows kids ages ten and under to dine free (after 2 p.m.) from the children's menu at any one of the resort's restaurants (excluding room service). The unlimited access fee also includes complimentary high-speed Internet access, local and long-distance phone calls, access to the Spa at Doral Fitness Center, and a 10 percent discount in selected resort shops.
Why Families Love It:
Camp Doral caters to kids aged five to 12. When ten or more children sign up for the program, counselors divide them into age groups five to eight and nine to 12. Prices per child are $25 for half-days, morning or afternoon, without lunch, or $35 with lunch; $55 for full days with lunch, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blue Lagoon lies right outside the camp's door and much of the kids' time is spent there. The camp's video game room is stocked with games, toys, movies, and sports equipment. In addition, there's golfing, fishing, arts and crafts, and tennis to keep youngsters running from sunup to sundown.
Families that like to fish can book a three-hour guided outing to catch bass in one of the property's lakes.
Special Activities & Events:
Boys and girls ages five to 14 can participate in Junior Summer Camp Doral at the Jim McLean Golf School. Weekly tuition is $285, and camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
