What to do in EP Tom Sawyer State Park

E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is a 369-acre oasis on the outskirts of Louisville. The rolling fields that were once farmland are now the site of some of the finest indoor and outdoor recreation facilities in Kentucky.

The park is named in honor of Erbon Powers "Tom" Sawyer, a Louisville leader and visionary. He and his wife Jean raised two daughters, Linda and Diane, host of ABC's "Good Morning America".

Tom Sawyer Park is a mecca for indoor and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Sign up for a summer aquatics program or one of several team sports scheduled year-round in the park's gymnasium.

The 1-mile fitness trail has 10 exercise stations. Joggers may join the 100/500/1000 Mile Club and receive an award by running or walking 100, 500, and 1000 miles on the park grounds. The 1.25- mile Goose Creek nature trail meanders through open meadow habitat to a semi-wooded area along Goose Creek. The loop trail is an easy grade, and wheelchair accessible with assistance. Year-round.

Also of interest is a radio-controlled airfield. The runway (400 feet long, 35 feet wide) may be used by all pilot members of the Tom Sawyer Model Aircraft Association. Open 10 AM-dusk daily, except for dates reserved for contests. Year-round, $ for Association dues.

The park sponsors arts and crafts classes for adults and children. Recreation
The olympic-size pool is open noon-6:30 p.m. to the public. Open Memorial through Labor Day. Beginning August 19 through Labor Day, hours are 3 PM to 6:30 PM Monday through Friday (diving well closed), and noon to 6:30 PM Saturday and Sunday (diving well tentatively open; call ahead for verification). $3 children & adult 6 and over; $2.50 children 3-5; free child 2 and under. Group discounts are available. Swimming lessons, swim team meets, water exercise classes and water polo are scheduled for the morning and evening hours. Pool available for rental, $ charged for activities.

The Activities Center houses a gymnasium with seating for 600, indoor courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton, a weight room, locker and shower facilities, game area, meeting room, and administrative offices. E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is located in Louisville. Take the Gene Snyder Freeway to the Westport Road west exit.

Climate
This state experiences a temperate climate with nearly 50 inches of rainfall annually. Thirteen inches of snow is an annual average in Kentucky. There are four distinct seasons here with summer temperatures reaching 90 degrees F frequently in July and August. Low summer temperatures dip near 70 degrees F at night. Winter high temperatures often reach 45 degrees with lows dipping below freezing. Spring and fall are particularly pleasant seasons in which to visit Kentucky. Fall months are the driest. The humidity levels in the state average near 54 degrees throughout the year. The humidity during the winter months averages somewhat higher.
