What to do in Detroit Lake State Recreation Area

Located in the Cascade Mountains, Detroit Lake State Park is the gateway to beautiful Detroit Lake. The 400' deep lake was created in 1953 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the Detroit Dam project. The lake is over nine miles long with more than 32 miles of shore line.

The park has a large campground bordering the lake. Along with two swimming areas, you'll find two playgrounds, a wildlife viewing area, and a visitor center with historical exhibits and a store with gifts, ice, soft drinks, firewood, souvenirs and educational toys.

Vital stats: The campground is open March - November. A small day-use fee is charged, or buy a $25 annual permit for access to all state park day-use areas. The campground has 107 full hookup, 70 electrical, 134 tent (maximum site 60 feet), 82 boat slips. For information only, call (503)854-3346 or (800) 551-6949. Campsites are reservable. Location
Detroit Lake is located on the Cascades side of the Wiillamette Valley, off Oregon Highway 22, 50 miles east of Salem.

Climate
Climate in this region changes with elevation. The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations and as wet heavy snow in the higher elevations. Winter temperatures are normally cool at the lower elevations and cold at the higher elevations. Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent and does not stay on the ground for long. Late spring, summer and early autumn bring the best chance for clear, sunny days and bring moderate temperatures.
