  I think your best bet would be to take Amtrak from the L.A. area to either Hanford or Fresno. Amtrak puts on a bus service connecting Hanford to Visalia, from where you can hop the Sequoia Park Shuttle to get you into the park to see the highlights. BUT, and this is a big but, I wouldn't recommend trying to do all this in one day. (Bear in mind, too, that Long Beach is on the "other" side of L.A. famous urban sprawl). If you can, you should at least try to spend a night up at Sequoia or Kings Canyon as it's going to take the better part of day just getting up there. You can always camp, or spend a night at Sequioa's historic Wuksachi Lodge.   It's about 240 miles from San Francisco to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Chances are you'll be taking the route through Fresno and on Highway 180 to the parks' Kings Canyon Visitor Center at Grant Grove Village. Here you'll find the General Grant Tree as well as be able to access the famous Generals Highway toward Lost Grove.

  Do you need to book into these parks to camp? How busy are they in May?

  Yes, I'd recommend making reservations as the campgrounds in these two popular California can get crowded in the summer. Summer gets into full swing at the end of May following the United States' Memorial Day holiday (last weekend of the month), but I'd still advise reserving spots ahead of time if you can. Check Recreation.gov for info and availability. Of course, once you get off the frontcountry, the world's your oyster as you can take your pick from primitive backcountry sites.
