Seattle Travel Tips

  • Opt for a harbor cruise or a sunset sail.  Private charters are also available.
  • Discover American music's roots at the Experience Music Project.
  • Consider a ski trip in winter. Seattle is all about the surrounding mountains, and the nearby ski areas of Snoqualmie Pass, Stephens Pass, and Crystal Mountain draw regional snowboarders and skiers.
  • Saltwater-fishing opportunities exist year-round in Seattle, though during certain times of year salmon must be released, usually around May and June. During those times, fish for lingcod, cabezon, and flounder.

We drove from Sparland IL (20 miles north of Peoria) to Lakewood, WA (20 miles south of Seattle) in 3.5 days. We traveled via I-90 and did very little sightseeing along the way as I had driven this route before. You can push it a bit more each day and do it in 3 days. We travel with a dog so have to stop more. About 1900 miles each way. Prepare for delays and detours in mountains due to construction and rock slides -- they happen.

You should take Sound Transit's Central Link Light Rail from SeaTac to University Station, which will put you close to downtown and places like Pike Place Market as well as the city's excellent Seattle Art Museum. I also think Bill Spiedel's Underground Tour is quite fun, if a bit touristy. If you still have some time and the weather's, you might want to head out to the Space Needle, though I'd be inclined to skip that for just strolling and enjoying the downtown area.

I would recommend staying in downtown Seattle. It has lots of good shopping, food, and there is a cool music museum. I would recommend a car.

    1. Pike's Place Market - This is definitely worth visiting. It will be crowded with tourists, but there are many good options for a bite to eat (check out Le Panier, Beecher's, and Piroshky's) and it is located right on Puget Sound and you can get a great view of the water. It is located in between Belltown and downtown which both offer shopping, art galleries, and restaurants. The Seattle Art Museum is also worth visiting, especially if you visit on a rainy day. 2. Kerry Park - Skip the ride to the top of the space needle and head to Kerry park. This small park offers one of the best views of the city for free! You will also be close to Queen Anne which is a great neighborhood to stroll through and has some shops and restaurants. You'll want to drive or take the bus as this is on top of a very steep hill. 3. Take a boat tour - There is one that take you out on Lake Union to see all of the floating homes, Mt Rainier, University of Washington, and the homes of rich and famous Seattlites.
