Hi Becky! I'm a native of San Diego so Come To San Diego! Dec. - Redwoods are wet and cold, SD may have some rain in Dec. but your chances of having sun are pretty good. We have the SD Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Legoland, Disneyland is about 2 hours drive north, SD has MILES of beaches. Forest experience? We have forests in Julian (which is about a 1 hour drive from downtown SD) AND has the best apple pie anywhere. Where to stay? Mission Valley has the highest concentration of hotels and motels and is centrally located to just about everything. It's close to 3 major freeways. Lots of museums - Midway Aircraft Carrier with lots of cool planes and areas to explore & Balboa Park which is also where the SD Zoo is located. Avoid Mexico, you need a passport, and you have to know your way around. I wouldn't take small children there if you are a "first timer". All in all, if you are looking for something for everyone...San Diego is it! :)

You should check out Mission Beach, La Jolla Cove Beach, and Silver Strand State Beach. If you only have time for one, Mission is probably the best for families--there's a boardwalk nearby with shops and restaurants.

Why don't you enjoy the delights of downtown San Diego before heading to the airport? Assuming your cruise gets into the main terminal, that'd make much more sense for you. Then, when the time comes, just hop a cab or metro bus out to the airport (visit http://www.sdcommute.com/Services/Route.aspx?r=992 for info on the efficient airport bus service, which should take you about 15 minutes).
