If you're at all outdoorsy, my recommendation would be a trip to some of the national parks. Depending on which region you'd like to visit, areas in Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and throughout California offer some spectacular scenery where solitude is just part of the reward. Obviously, hiking and camping alone brings its own dangers, so just be careful about safety precautions and the necessary gear, plus let someone know your plans. Another idea would be to take a road trip along one of North America's scenic byways, routes like California Highway One, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or even along Route 66. As for cities, my pick would be for Quebec City, which is a lovely city through which to stroll, browse galleries, and ruminate in atmospheric cafes. I was there solo a few years ago and felt quite at home!
