You could stay in Sleeping Bear Dunes at the campground or Sleeping Bear B&B. We have a guide to the area: http://bit.ly/ctB4q6 http://bit.ly/aMMDF2 Or you could stay in Traverse City and see sights around there, then do a day trip or two at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Another option, Mackinac Island is an excellent place to visit for a family. We have a family guide to the area: http://bit.ly/ctB4q6

I would look into Petosky, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. They are about a half hour from Mackinac. They are touristy and fun places. Mackinac is beautiful but I would say 2 days is a good amount of time there. If you golf there are many places in that area. Also Traverse City which is about 2 hours from Mackinac has wine country. http://www.michigan.org/Things-to-Do/Attractions/Wineries/Default.aspx?city=G3602 The michigan.org site is a great resource to find places to go in MI

Too bad you're not there at the end of August for the "Cascades Muster," the Midwest's biggest reenactment that takes place in Cascades Falls Park in Jackson, MI. Another group, the Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, has something tentatively slated in Elba, MI, on October 2-3, though check with them directly for details.
