Not sure if this counts as historical or not but a tour of the infamous Eastern State Penitentiary might be a fun. You can see some of the sites in Philly's Old City and catch a bus near the Constitution Center for a short ride to the prison: http://www.easternstate.org And of course everyone can run the Rocky steps in front of the Philly Art Museum.

Yes, you can ride on Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland (and Virginia). They have rules about what time of year you can ride. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/9SLgCC

You can travel south to Assateague State Park, with its wild horses and empty beaches, but you won't find much in the way of places to stay or services. A better bet might be to stay north of O.C. in Delaware, at Bethany Beach or Fenwick Island.
