Ocean City is the classic Maryland beach getaway. You can also try the Delaware beaches of Fenwick Island, Dewey, Bethany, and Rehoboth. There will be lots of fun going on during July 4th weekend, so no worries on finding activities for the kids.

Perhaps you're thinking Fort Smallwood Park near Riviera Beach, MD, which has a small beach area but no swimming is permitted here. Same goes for nearby Downs Memorial Park. You can, however, swim at Sandy Point State Park, which is about ten miles southeast of Riviera Beach just off US-301 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

You can travel south to Assateague State Park, with its wild horses and empty beaches, but you won't find much in the way of places to stay or services. A better bet might be to stay north of O.C. in Delaware, at Bethany Beach or Fenwick Island.

Not sure if this counts as historical or not but a tour of the infamous Eastern State Penitentiary might be a fun. You can see some of the sites in Philly's Old City and catch a bus near the Constitution Center for a short ride to the prison: http://www.easternstate.org And of course everyone can run the Rocky steps in front of the Philly Art Museum.
