Hi Martin ~ What a great idea for a retirement gift to an employee! The gift of travel! Some questions you may want to consider; Has the person traveled to Europe before? If so, to where? Do they have a valid passport; or is that part of the gift as well? A 7-10 day land trip would be perfect! Combining two classic cities of Europe such as London/Paris, Prague/Budapest, Istanbul/Cappadocia, Rome/Florence would work well. Or a 7 night city stay would be just as fun in Barcelona, Istanbul, Amalfi Coast or Dubrovnik. There are many options depending on when you will presenting the gift and when they can travel. Hope this helps ~ Any way you look at it; it's a fantastic opportunity and a gift anyone would welcome!

Hi Martin, Away.com doesn't distribute brochures, so you'll need to contact the outfitter directly. Not sure to which outfitter you're referring, though perhaps check with someone like DuVine Adventures (http://www.duvine.com/) or The Wayfarers (http://www.thewayfarers.com/), both of whom offer excellent biking and walking tours throughout Europe.

Take the train. Eurozone rail systems are very good, efficient and well-priced (with notable exception of British Isles!). You can do Heidelbrg-Lucerne with some transfers at Karlsruhe and Basel; Lucerne to Salzburg is pretty much a straight shot, with one change at Zurich. Failing that, look for low-cost air carriers.
