  VPS is the code for the airport at Fort Walton Beach. It is about 12 miles to Destin from VPS via the Mid-Bay $2.50 toll bridge; a pleasant ride.

  Destin does have a lot of high-rise buildings on the beach. If you're looking for something a bit more intimate, try heading down Hwy. 30/98 a bit toward Sandestin, or even further on scenic Hwy. 30-A to Blue Mountain, Grayton, or Seagrove. The beaches around Grayton are beautiful, with not a high-rise in sight.

  Destin is decidedly a high-rise and resort destination (not that there's anything wrong with that; I love it), so your best options here include Tops'l Beach & Racquet Resort and Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. Destin is also home to all of the usual chain hotels, and they are all decent options, but Tops'l and Sandestin are fabulous places. If you decide you want a lower-key vacation, look further down the panhandle at the beach communities along Highway 30-A (Dune Allen, Santa Rosa, Grayton, etc.). You can rent houses or nice condos (just a few levels high, no high-rises in these parts) and enjoy uncrowded beaches.
