    Unless you really need the space..big family, etc. you don't need to rent an SUV. Roads are mostly clear even in January. Yes, it snows, and is cold, but major roads are worked 24-7. Worst case: road closure for maybe 1 day! But rare. Usually, being caught in snow storm on the highway, might only delay you 2-3 extra travel hours. Late model rental car with all-season tires should do fine. My ski/mt. transportation is a Ford Focus..no chains. Pay attention to weather & reports. Drive carefully, keep it on the slow side, stick to major highways/streets, and you'll be O.K. Your real enemy is traffic! Weekdays good! Weekends bad!
