Aix-en-Provence is located in the south of France, near the Arc River, about 30 miles north of Marseille. It sits some 18 miles inland from the sea, but still enjoys a pleasant, Mediterranean climate. On average, Aix gets 300 days of sunshine each year, with warm but mild temperatures.
Summer is high season here, with August bringing the hottest weather (temps get up to 85 degrees) and the biggest crowds. Expect Aix to be overrun with tourists and student backpackers this month in particular.
Spring is a great time of year if you can manage a trip then. The weather is warm, with temperatures swaying between 54 and 70 degrees, and the crowds are small. Shoulder season crops up again in October, when the weather starts to cool. Autumn is also the start of the wettest weeks of the year. October sees an average of 3.7 inches of rain, with an average of three inches following in November.
Still, it never gets all that chilly in Aix, and snow is rare. In January, the mercury rarely dips beneath the 30s, with average temperatures falling between 37 and 51.
