  Not sure where you'll be arriving in Maine (if at all), but there are lots of great options up around near Bangor, Maine. You'll probably just be missing the peak foliage in this area, but landscapes should still be quite spectacular plus you might avoid some of the heavier leaf-peeping traffic. One of the most popular areas to drive is the "Downeast Acadia" region, which includes such highlights as Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, the Schoodic Peninsula, and Penobscot Bay.
