For a dose of authentic culture and comfort, Ubud is the premier choice in Bali. Though there's no mistaking this tourist town for a rural or pastoral village, if your aim is to immerse yourself in the Balinese culture, there's no reason to go anywhere else. The town breathes atmosphere: You'll see ceremonies on every street corner, and the surrounding country is stunning. About the only thing it doesn't have is a beach, but they're all a short drive away.
Ubud is the cultural pulse of the island and the richest region in Bali for art production, which is possibly why so many expat artists have made their homes here. It's a town with nooks of true refinement, chic galleries, and some fine spas. Ubud's central location makes the whole island accessible by day trip, but the phosphorescent rice paddies, virgin jungle, gorges, and river valleys of this Shangri-La might keep you there for your whole trip.
