250km (155 miles) SE of Paris, 76km (47 miles) NW of Beaune

Saulieu is interesting, but its food put it on the international map. The town has enjoyed a reputation for cooking since the 17th century. Even Mme de Sévigné praised it in her letters. So did Rabelais.

The main sight is the Basilique St-Andoche, place de la Fontaine (tel. 03-80-64-07-03), which has some interesting decorated capitals. Next door, in the Musée François-Pompon, place de la Fontaine, at rue Sallier (tel. 03-80-64-19-51), you can see works by François Pompon, the sculptor of animals whose works are featured in Paris's Musée d'Orsay. Pompon's large statue of a bull stands on a plaza off N6 at the entrance to Saulieu. Also in the museum are archaeological remnants from the Gallo-Roman era, sacred medieval art, and old tools illustrating aspects of life in Burgundy several centuries ago. The museum is open from March to December Wednesday through Monday from 10am to 12:30pm and 2 to 5:30pm, Sunday 10:30am to noon and 2:30 to 5pm. Admission is 4€ ($4.60) for adults, 2.50€ ($2.90) for children 12 to 16. It's closed in January and February.
