If we were going to live on the Gulf Coast, it would be in picturesque Rockport, Texas. This is a delightful little town, with a good (although not great) public beach, wonderful opportunities for bird-watching, boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities, and the best art scene of any of the small towns we've seen in southern and western Texas.
Rockport and its neighbor Fulton have a combined population of about 9,000, but are home to about 150 resident artists and a half dozen or so commercial art galleries, in addition to the excellent Rockport Center for the Arts. Tiny Fulton was established in 1866 by rancher George Ware Fulton, and the much larger Rockport emerged the following year as a seaport. Today the Rockport-Fulton area, along with Aransas Pass (12 miles south), are a major port for commercial and sport fishing, and famous as the winter home for North America's largest flock of whooping cranes.
