Puerto Williams has a population of 2,500 and is a small naval base and town located on Isla Navarino on the southern shore of the Beagle Channel. As a destination, it's superseded by its Argentine neighbor Ushuaia, chiefly due to the town's isolation and the difficulty getting there -- which for some is part of its draw. Apart from a few hiking trails and a museum, there's not a lot to do, but adventurers setting out for or returning from sailing and kayaking trips around Cape Horn use the town as a base. Several boat companies leaving from Ushuaia or Punta Arenas stop off here. It's worth a walk through town past the colorful jumble of tin houses picturesquely nestled below verdant peaks. Alternatively, visitors can fly here for a multiple-day sailing adventure.
