50km (31 miles) N oN of Johannesburg

An almost uninterrupted ribbon of development connects Johannesburg and Pretoria, yet Pretoria's atmosphere is much more laid-back, and, some would say, comparatively dull. But the administrative capital of South Africa, once an Afrikaner stronghold, has become home to a much more cosmopolitan population since Nelson Mandela was inaugurated the first democratically elected president at its Union Buildings, and a number of good restaurants in particular cater to the burgeoning diplomatic community.

Pretoria has some fine lodging options, but frankly, by staying here you miss out on Jo'burg's excitement and energy, not to mention its better choice of accommodations. Still, the city and its outlying areas have enough in the way of cultural and historical sights to fill a full day trip, particularly in October and November, when its 70,000 jacarandas are in full bloom, and the streets are carpeted in purple blossoms.
