This village with the funny-sounding name is part of a three-resort complex that includes Hochgurgl and Untergurgl. Obergurgl, lying less than 3km (2 miles) upstream from Untergurgl, is one of Austria's loftiest villages at 1,928m (6,322 ft.) and the second-highest parish in Europe. This is where the Swiss physicist and aeronaut Dr. Auguste Piccard landed in his celebrated balloon.
This district is one of the major ski centers of the Tyrolean country. It's not well known among American skiers, although if you stay here, you'll be virtually on the doorstep of the Ötztal Alps, surrounded by towering peaks and glistening glaciers. All the ski runs end right in the village. A two-stage chair lift, leaving from the center of Obergurgl, services the principal ski area, the Gaisberg-Hohe-Mutt.
