Centered around a former mill that produced fabrics and, later, aircraft parts, Ludlow has an unpretentious made-in-mill-town-Vermont character that seems quite distant from the prim grace of white clapboard Grafton. Low-key and unassuming, it draws skiers by the busload to Okemo Mountain, a once-sleepy ski resort that's come to life in recent years. Also notable as one of the few ski towns in New England that avoided a Tyrolean identity crisis, Ludlow lacks splashy nightlife and fancy restaurants, and longtime visitors like it that way.
