9 miles S of Brunswick
Once a winter playground for the Rockefellers, Pulitzers, Goulds, Morgans, and Cranes, Jekyll Island is the smallest of the state's coastal islands, with 5,600 acres of highlands and 10,000 acres of marshlands. Today it's no longer the exclusive enclave it once was, and is open to all those attracted by its miles of beautiful, white-sand Atlantic beaches and holes of championship golf. It also has far better tennis complexes than St. Simons Island. Families come here for a wealth of outdoor activities.
The word "wealth" had another meaning on the island, at least from 1886 to 1942. The Jekyll Island Club, which owned the then-private island, was reputed to represent more than one-sixth of the world's wealth. A 1904 edition of Munsey's Magazine referred to the Jekyll Island Club as the "richest, the most exclusive, and most inaccessible club in the world."
