Once a quiet Appalachian village, Helen has been turned into a bit of Bavaria in the Georgia hills. Main Street buildings have red roofs, flower boxes, balconies, and murals. You can shop for sweaters, porcelains, cuckoo clocks, and Christmas ornaments; enjoy wurst and beer to oompah music at an outdoor beer garden; and in September and October join the revelry of Oktoberfest. Numerous alpine-style hotels, with names that include the Heidi Motel, have comfortable accommodations and restaurants.
