Danang, the fourth-largest city in Vietnam, is one of the most important seaports in the central region. It played a prominent historical role in the American war, being the landing site for the first American troops officially sent to Vietnam. Even with the bustle of ships coming and going, poor Danang has to be one of the world's ugliest cities, and there isn't a major attraction except for the Cham Museum (a must-see). Unfortunately, it has been given the shaft by all the tour buses that used to make a stop here en route between Hoi An and Hue. Nowadays, if you can get them to stop for the museum, they'll give you only about 20 minutes to look. Furama Resort, a short ride from the city center, is one of the finest high-end resorts in Indochina.

There are a few excellent-value hotels in Danang, so an option is to actually stay in the city and take day trips to nearby Hoi An.

China Beach, or My Khe, as it's known locally, is worth a stop. This former U.S. recreation base has a light-sand coast with excellent views of the nearby Marble Mountains, and is just beginning to draw international tourists.
