20 miles (32km) N of Belize City; 10 miles (16km) S of Ambergris Caye
The word is definitely out. Caye Caulker is no longer the secret hideaway of a handful of happy hippie backers and a few chosen cognoscenti. But this is still the epitome of a small, isolated, and laid-back Caribbean getaway. Unlike neighboring San Pedro, you won't be constantly run off the road by cars and golf carts. In fact, Caye Caulker has no cars, and the golf cart traffic is still rather light. Let's hope it stays that way.
Nevertheless, behind the scenes battles are brewing, as developers covetously eye dormant land and pristine mangroves. Hopefully the island will not become as overbuilt and shadeless as San Pedro. When I last visited, there was quite a bit of cleared land around the airport, all laid out for development, although with little apparent action underway.
