The northerly stretch of Penobscot Bay is rich in history, especially maritime history. In the mid-19th century, Belfast and Searsport produced more than their share of ships, and captains to pilot them on ventures around the globe. A century ago, the now-sleepy village of Searsport had 17 shipyards. In 1856 alone, 24 ships of more than 1,000 tons were launched from Belfast.
When shipbuilding died out at the end of the 1800s, a thriving poultry industry sustained the area. Alas, that too declined as the industry moved south. In recent decades, the area has attracted artisans of various stripes, who sell wares at local shops. Tourists tend to pass through the region quickly, en route from the tourist enclave of Camden to the tourist enclave of Bar Harbor. It's worth slowing down.
